New diesel engines – less emissions and improved fuel economy
New and improved D5 and 2.4D diesel engines emitting less CO2 whilst at the same time delivering improved fuel economy will be available from spring 2009 in the Volvo S80, V70, XC60 and XC70.
New and improved D5 and 2.4D diesel engines emitting less CO2 whilst at the same time delivering improved fuel economy will be available from spring 2009 in the Volvo S80, V70, XC60 and XC70.
What’s more, the new 2.4D reduces CO2 emissions below the all-important 160 g/km which puts these vehicles in a lower allowance threshold for company cars.
Innovative engineering solutions include sequential twin turbochargers, ceramic glow-plugs and piezoelectric fuel injectors and in the Volvo S80, fuel consumption has been cut to some of the lowest levels for a car of this size - 45.6mpg, while CO2 emissions are only 164 g/km.
The new D5 engine:-
- 20 PS performance boost to 205 PS and 420 Nm of torque
The 2.4D single turbo engine:-
- 175 PS, an improvement of 12 PS, and 420 Nm of torque

New high-performance D5 engine1
- Twin turbochargers of different sizes operate in sequence to provide added power over a broader rev range
- Immediate response from the lowest engine revs without any perceptible turbo lag
- Rapid acceleration at all speeds, with smooth power delivery between the power bands of both turbo-charger ranges
- Higher levels of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) across a wider rev range
- Delivering a combination of high performance and low fuel consumption
New single-turbo 2.4D
- Piezoelectric fuel injectors developed to cut fuel consumption through extremely rapid and precise injection sequences
- The single turbocharger has been optimised to produce high torque from low revs
